Highlights of the Sacred Valley Day Tour

Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, once served as a refuge for the last emperors, priests, and priestesses, allowing the Inca Empire to survive for 40 years after the Spanish arrival. This secret and mysterious citadel was likely designed by Emperor Pachacutec Inca Yupanqui of the IX Inca Dynasty. Nestled spectacularly between dramatic mountains at 2,400 meters above sea level, it was built around 1450.

Incredibly, the Spanish never discovered the citadel, and it remained a hidden city known only to locals for centuries. It wasn’t until 1911 that American historian Hiram Bingham brought Machu Picchu to global attention. Since then, extensive restoration efforts have showcased its impressive layout of agricultural terraces, homes, temples, and plazas. In 1983, UNESCO declared Machu Picchu a World Heritage Site, calling it “an absolute masterpiece of architecture and a unique testimony to the Inca civilization”.
